War against Obesity: Fat Invoice?

Saturday 26 January

11:00 - 12:30

Obesity is the fastest-growing chronic disease, killing 2.8 million adults every year. With 1.4 billion overweight adults, we live in a world where unhealthy food, labour-saving devices, motorized transport and sedentary work are prevalent. Fast food sales are also on the rise, blurring the boundaries between meals and snacks.

Dimensions to be addressed:

  • What are the key drivers of the obesity epidemic?
  • What are the societal and economic priorities that challenge our efforts at obesity reduction?
  • What policies need to be implemented?
  • What role does physical activity play?

Populations who consume large amounts of meat need to cut down. This will reduce unhealthy levels of saturated fat. Industrially produced meat eats up a third of the world's cereals and most of its soymeal as animal feed, while people go hungry. Plus emits GHGs and pollutes rivers & soils. Can we aim for a mainly plant-based diet with smaller amounts of meat, eggs and dairy from humane and sustainable farming?
